Fill the Hole in Your Soul—Become Whole

Hole in my Soul

Many people reflect on life and evaluate their ability at achieving happiness. Quite often, I have heard people refer to a “hole in their soul.” A void that exists within their being that drives them to pursue the proper solution to fill the void, to complete them as an individual. This solution, they believe, will bring them to a point of contentment—the kind of happiness we all desire.

In attempting to fill the void, more often than not, we turn to the wrong thing. Many of us have attempted to fill the hole in our soul with money, food, alcohol, drugs, sex, and so on… And sometimes we attempt to fill it with something good—but it is unable to complete the task—like our spouse, children, job, and so on…. It is unfair to us and the people involved, to expect fulfillment of the soul’s need for genuine contentment in any of these ways. The needed outcome has only one proper solution.

With football season kicking-off this month in the US, I reflect on something that Tom Brady said back in 2005. At that point in time; as star quarterback for the New England Patriots—Brady had earned three super bowl rings, was making millions of dollars each year, and was dating a beautiful actress. During an interview Tom said, “…I have three Super Bowl rings, and still think there’s something greater out there for me? I mean, maybe a lot of people would say, ‘Hey man, this is what is.’ I reached my goal, my dream, my life. Me, I think: God, it’s gotta be more than this. I mean this can’t be what it’s all cracked up to be. I mean I’ve done it. I’m 27. And what else is there for me?”

So apparently, life and the pursuit of happiness is a complicated thing. This man was, and still is, on top of the world. He is living what most would call a dream life, and he states that “there’s something greater out there for me,” and follows up with “it’s gotta be more than this.” Here’s the great news, this soul-need for contentment can be achieved—there is indeed more. The “more” can be found in the bible. The God who created us “wired us” to be in relationship with Him. This is what makes life complete. This is what fills the “hole in your soul.” It really is common sense—that the God who created us would be the entity to provide us with the happiness we desire. This happiness comes through a relationship with God’s only son, Jesus. Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”(Rev 3:20)

So—if you are like me and many others—seeking to attain the human desire of a content soul, the only solution is Jesus. He is big enough to handle the task! Jesus offers to complete you, just open the door of your heart and invite Him in! The bible clearly states that, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”(John 3:16-17) Jesus paid the ultimate price on the cross to reconnect us, a broken people, with our perfect Creator—God.
